Big Idea
Artistic Experimentation:
Using typical materials in atypical ways
Lesson Overview
Students at this age often feel the pressure to fit into what is deemed “good art” looking at the realistic euro-centric standards of art seen through history. This is important to reassure students in developing their own identities as artists, and exploring those identities through art making to investigate what intrigues you as an artist but also as a person.

Lesson 1
Art, Food, and "Trash"
Students will be introduced and tasked with creating sculptures out of recycles and other materials in their art kits/homes. We will look at the work of Michelle Reader/ Tim Noble and Sue Webster/Jes Fan with a PowerPoint Presentation with video included. Students will also be introduced to their sketchbooks, design and personalize covers and will start on their first prompt of their favorite foods, which will lead them into sculpting it with model magic.. Students will also take part in participating in a PearDeck Presentation on Artists that have used food throughout History.
Lesson 2
Animal Abstraction
Students will be exploring drawing and painting techniques through practice and finding the challenges/successes shown. They will then learn about color theory and utilize this knowledge through paintings, while incorporating fun and exploration through opposite use of colors.

Lesson 3
Mixed Media Sculptures
Students will be exploring sculpture through paper folding techniques to create their own paper sculptures. They (students) will first be looking at different techniques to create form and trying some of them out, the second day they will be designing the base of their sculpture where they can choose either foam core or cardboard both of which were provided by us in their kits. The third day they will be able to create more paper forms and folding techniques to adhere to their base to finalize their paper and cardboard/foam core sculptures.
